Cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM) is a mixture of isomeric organic compounds with formula C6H10(CH2OH)2. It is a colorless low-melting solid used in the production of polyester resins. Commercial samples consist of a mixture of cis and trans isomers. It is a di-substituted derivative of cyclohexane and is classified as a diol.

CWB CHDM Technology

CWB process enables the direct hydrogenation of terephthalic acid (TPA) to 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid (CHDA) to avoid an extra esterification step (TPA->DMT). Subsequent hydrogenation of CHDA yields CHDM. CWB proprietary catalysts give high yield of CHDM with standard cis/trans ratio (~3:7).

Process Highlights:

  • Direct hydrogenation of TPA, extra esterification step (TPA->DMT) is avoid.
  • Proprietary catalyst is used for a high selectivity hydrogenation reactions.
  • Industrial standard cis/train ratio CHDM are guaranteed. Quality of CHDM is assured through bench polymerisation testing.
  • Water is the only solvent. No organic solvents will be used.
  • Mild hydrogenation conditions, lower in operation pressure and temperature compared to existing DMT method.
  • No methanol waste is generated (no esterification involved).

  • Competitive raw material (TPA-based) to other CHDM production process.
  • Mild hydrogenation conditions, lower in operation pressure and temperature (Compare to DMT route). Lower in capital investment.
  • Reduced energy consumption through heat integration and optimised purification process.

Safety and Environment:

  • Reduced risk in operation due to the reduced hydrogenation operating pressure.
  • No toxic methanol waste is generated. By products are mainly water.
